The
Environmental Protection Bureau (DSPA) has advised the public to exercise extra
caution towards a possible scam. Fraudsters have pretended to be DSPA staff,
and have attempted to sell environmentally friendly products and services to
members of the public.
In a press release yesterday, DSPA said that
they had recently received complaints from members of the public, who said that
individuals claiming to be DSPA staff had visited their homes and tried to sell
environmentally friendly products. Local media reports said that these products
included water filters and energy-efficent domestic appliances.
Moreover,
the self-professed DSPA workers also attempted to solicit a service payment
from the targeted citizens, in exchange for a speedy application to obtain a
DSPA subsidy, also known as the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency
Fund, intended for environmental protection projects.
DSPA
denied sending staff to local families to sell any products or services. They
stressed that the authorities approve financial support for environmental
protection projects in accordance with their merits and established procedures,
and would not sacrifice public interests by interfering with application
procedures in exchange for a service payment.
After
receiving the complaints, DSPA said that they had referred the case to the
police for criminal investigation.
The
DSPA stressed that the Fund, since its inception, has never engaged in any
promotion or the sale of any products to the public. They also added that they
do not have plans to cooperate with any private companies to sell products
directly to local households.
DSPA
advised companies, associations and institutions interested in the application
for financial aid under the Fund, to apply to DSPA in person. The Fund’s
executive committee decides whether to approve the subsidy after a case-by-case
analysis of the functions and purposes of the products presented in the
application. Citizens should immediately contact the DSPA when faced with
suspicious situations. Members of the public can call the DSPA hotline (2876
2626) for enquiries.
