Scientific Women

Scientific Women

A Poem by Kasey Miriam

Women like her didn't care what men had to say.
Marie Curie a lady, who was Polish like me,
Studied science in her home.
Radioactivity, her main focus,
Would truly be the death of her,
But
With her husband by her side.
It mattered not what people thought,
Women too are smart
And we will study what we want.

An image of an independent strong woman. "Women too are smart," very true. I think we now live at a time when most people know this and see women as equal to men. (of course I am not talking about countries who contain a population of primitive people). You didn't even need to use rhyming for the poem to flow and soud good. i'm glad I read this ;)

History is full of scientific women that rose through science despite its great barriers. I personally know a few, but the one that comes to mind is the astronomer, Margaret Burbidge--see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margaret_Burbidge. (She worked at UCSD,'s Center for Astrophysics and Space Science, where I still work.) When she was young, she couldn't even get observing time on telescopes because she was a woman. So her husband had to apply for the time for her. Her husband, by the way, was Geoff Burbidge, an equally famous astronomer, and together they were two of the authors of the now incredibly famous paper known simply as BBFH (Burbidge, Burbidge, Fowler, Hoyle) that explains the cosmic origin of all of the elements. So hang in there. Things are opening up, even though the playing field is still not quite level.

Best regards,

Rick

PS. BTW there is another female biologist that posts beautiful poetry on WC, and that is Marie Anzalone (her pen name) at http://www.writerscafe.org/hauntedfox. You might like to check out her work.

An exceptional poem! It's true that women like to study what they want. Our curiosity to the surrounding always bother our minds. This is a great work :)

Very nice. Women do not get enough credit in our generation or any other generation for that matter. They do deserve more respect and recognition. Thanks for sharing

Madame Curie was Polish by birth but was a naturalized French citizen. Kudos to Madame Curie for her discoveries!

Another extraordinary scientific woman was Rosalind Franklin. Her destiny was very injust as you know. nothing and no one could change it. The Nobel Prize was there ...

The gods of Pantheon had other thoughts many years ago. She wanted to discover their secret, the secret of life.

Great written.

I've never heard of Marie Curie *I will do my google search after I drop this post* but she seems very dedicated to her craft and cause which is always great. I like your poem of that.

She paid the price for a nobel prize. The fact that she was determined past the point of what others thought show the focus and tunnel vision it took to become what she was.
