Cages

Cages

A Poem by Amalie

There’s a bird in a cage
Yelling and squawking
Making a fuss
I walk up to the bird
Asking “Why do you cry?”
He shouts “I want to get out
“Please let me fly!”
I open the cage, out the window he goes
Where he ends up, at least I’ll never know

There’s a fish in a bowl
Splashing and struggling
Making a fuss
I walk up to the fish
Asking “Why do you cry?”
He shouts “I want to swim free
“Before I finally die!”
So I take him outside, and put him into the stream
He’s out in the world, living his dream

There’s a dog in a cage
Barking and biting
Making a fuss
I walk up to the dog
Asking “Why do you cry?”
He shouts “I want to run!
“Can you take me outside?”
So I open the cage, and out the door he’s gone
No one to tie him down, he’s free to run

So I sit on the steps and start to weep
Making a fuss
A small child walks up
Asking “Why do you cry?”
I shout “The bird got to fly, the fish got to swim, and the dog got to run, I set them free!
“If only getting out of my cage was just as easy.”

I like this one, it really says a lot in a few words. Getting out of tough situations can be easy for some, like the bird, fish and dog in this poem, and for others, like the narrator, it seems impossible. Nice work, Amalie ^^

Nice poem, well penned. I once wrote a novel that had the line something like this ' In self made cages of impermable walls of nothing the great lawyers hide behind the bars of their own making.' Shakespear's tempest also reminds me of walls made of books and maps. Nice poem. jay
