Two Lives

Two Lives

A Poem by Brett Hernan

Before

and beyond death

in two lives

I dream of you

in absolutes

of stillness

animated within

now

just a portrait

from another era

where time busies

forgetfulness,

decaying petals

rigor-mortis struck

stalks,

oblivious, comatose,

rigid,

their discarded husks

the seeds

of needful things

we condense

into familiar terms

to explain

vast volumes

through single words,

the entirety of

eyes yet still alive.
