A Story by Carl Drake Barnard
"

There is always the one person you hold dearest to your heart .Although you might never have the opportunity to see her again you’ll always do anything to save her.

"

It all started several years ago, Josh was still a teen back then living his life in New York with his friends and family. He was one of those kids who enjoyed life to the fullest partying and going out as often as he could. His friends got him in a lot of trouble, but he didn’t care much. All he wanted was to break free where law and rules didn’t apply to him. He took chances, whenever he saw the opportunity. Josh lived his life by being impulsive and insensitive, as for religion he didn’t really care much for it. He loved being his own ruler, where he could do what he want, whenever he wanted to.

That was until he met Claire. She was an attractive young student who had just moved in from South Africa. But there was something different about her. She had this way of making him calm and making him see life in ways he never could imagine. He looked at her and saw her for who she was. She was kind and pure-hearted and had faith in her Lord. Josh had fallen in love with her, for the very first time he was overwhelmed by love and he didn’t know what to do. He went on for days without speaking to her, but deep down he felt that he had to. So the next day, he went to her and said, “Hi” the word was so hard to say, he started to blush out of pure embarrassment. She looked at him, smiling with a kind and adoring face and said “Hi” back.

After sometime, Josh’s bond towards Claire became stronger and they became friends. He would speak to her often and always smiled, when he saw she looked down. But Josh soon discovered that his dreams were about to fall apart. Claire was moving away to a private school back in South Africa and he wouldn’t be able to see her anymore. He couldn’t believe it. He felt lost, as if a huge part of him was going away. When she had left, he made a promise to himself that he would never be that kind of person again. He left his friends, stopped drinking, and paid more attention to his religion and school work. He soon received his tourism scholarship and went to study further.

After six years, Josh had become a successful business owner. He had lost contact with Claire, soon after she had left, he stopped trying to contact her for he felt it was better this way. In his mind he was happy just knowing she was happy. That same year, one of Claire’s friends called Josh and told him that she was in the hospital. Claire’s heart was failing. He took the week off and flew to South Africa, where he rented a room in a hotel. Josh went to the hospital where Claire was being held. He saw her, tubes from the life system were connected to her and she looked so in pain. He looked at her and still saw his old Claire, beautiful and fragile. Josh couldn’t bear seeing her like this, after all this time, he had prayed that she would be save and happy.

Josh went to the doctor and asked what could be done to save her. The doctor told him that the only way Claire could survive is if she had a heart transplant. Josh had asked the doctor if there was a donor, but he replied no. Josh sat there for a few minutes and thought what he could do, he knew if he didn’t help her that she would die, but without her he wouldn’t have a reason to live. She was his inspiration, his motivation to make a success of his life and all he could do was give her the same opportunities. Josh told the doctor that he wanted to do it. But the doctor told him no and that it’s illegal and the only way for him to donate his heart was to be brain dead. He couldn’t let her just die and so Josh went to the doctor and said he wanted to be an anonymous future heart donor for Claire. The doctors tested and the results were positive.

Josh went home that night and the following day bought a pistol. He called the ambulance and told them there has been a suicide attempt. He then wrote a note instructing them to take him to the hospital and do a heart transplant. When he heard the ambulance came, he shot himself in the head. That night the doctors did the heart transplant and it was a success. After a few weeks, she was released. They didn’t tell her who the donor was except that he was a healthy man.

A few months later, Claire’s friend told her that the donor was Josh and that he had ask if she could give a letter to her. Claire took the letter and started reading

“Dear Claire, if you’re reading this it means you’re alright and that Jill has told you everything. I know this must be strange for you given that we haven’t talked for a while ha-ha and that we were only friends. But I chose to save you because you meant a lot to me and I love you. When you left I felt different and I didn’t want to be that guy anymore so I changed and left my past for good then everything just fell in to place and I had achieved everything my heart desired, except you. But when I found out you were sick I couldn’t let you go, you had given me so much in life and I wanted you to have the same chances I had- a bright and beautiful future. So look after yourself and know I'll be with you every step of the way. - Take care your old friend...

The end…

Just did some clarity in there --- up top to give this a bit of a touch up...that's a heartfelt story...a bit over the edge type with the drastic measures he took to give his life for a life --- but it's the issue of being there for her...and now they are together in an orthodox way...but made for a good read...grabs the reader and makes the point across...

Very sweet and nice story. It is well developed and has a clear story line, which is good! The only thing I think you need to work on is your punctuation usage (when you need to put commas, colons, semi-colons, etc). If you read through it before, that might help! But great job!
