Don't Do It

Don't Do It

A Poem by Theo Ratcliffe

She stood there
With a knife in her hand,
ready to end it all.
And I was just watching,
not doing anything at all.
It was like a dream, only I knew it wasn't.
She told me she would do this,
Told me I had to choose.

Either way there was no winning.
I could have told someone,
But if I did
The one I loved would forget about me
Or
I could tell no one,
And have her gone forever.

There was no winning.
The pain I would feel if I lost her forever,
worse then the pain I feel now.

I know I could have helped her,
and yet I did nothing.

I was just watching,
not doing anything at all,
as she stood there.

With a knife in her hand, ready to end it all.

My favorite line is either "She told me she was going to do this, told me I had to choose." or the "Ether way there was no winning." It seems rather fateful or fatalistic. Apart from the death bit, I love the sense of quick decisive nature of this person that I am getting quizzically
