How to Forget You

How to Forget You

A Poem by D Alan Johnstone

One day, you'll reach out
and I won't be around.

I wrote this down to remember,
but memories are fleeting...

I long for these
recollections to depart
and lead me to a place
...a restful space

where I'm not defined
by the one I'm thinking of
and nerves die off
from misrepresented love.
...Where I no longer praise you.

I long for aphasia.

Axons won't lend
themselves to pain.
What remains
is only blissful ignorance,

and never again
will the love once-felt
occupy every moment
in this damaged brain.

I love so much about this piece-the perfect sway of the rhythm, the unique and fitting word choices and symbolism and several lines as well as a feeling that we all have felt but crafted into beautiful words. "and nerves die off from misrepresented love" wow, what a great line, which links up to the "ignorance is bliss" line.. also you tied the nerves dying off with a longing for aphasia and the axons not connecting the pain.. this is beautiful and a very vivid way to show you just don't want to feel anything or this anymore.. just let it die with the memories that are hard to recall. What a cohesive piece. Well done!

I like when sadness is understood well enough by the one that is feeling sad, I mean, even with the sadness, one is able to express its emotions so clearly. For sadness can be confusing, often with more questions then comprehension. You wrote and expressed the feelings very well in this sad, but great poem. I love the last stanza.

Well done from me!!!
Stay happy
