Modern Day Heroes

Modern Day Heroes

A Poem by Fran Marie

Heroes and Legends, one can appreciate.
Ideal perfection we try to emulate.
Our heroes we adore and idolize
put upon pedestals,
We tend to view with admiring eyes.

But heroes and legends for everyone vary
What some find pleasing others find contrary.
Nevertheless, we have to have them to admire
To conquer fears and fullfill desire.

And the attributes we consider,
which make them more than just mere men.
Is that they fight with truth and integrity
and believe in that for which they stand.

Yes, we all have our heroes
and they're lengends in our heart and mind
and yes, I suppose modern day heroes
still exist, in this corrupted modern age and time.
But thing is perhaps, they're just a bit harder to find.

Today's modern day heroes usually do not go into politics or amass fortunes. Today's modern day heroes are the father and mothers that get up every morning to make sure the children are fed and that the homework is done. Today's modern heroes are the parents that turn off the TV and disconnect the Internet and tell the children they love to finish homework and read a good book. Later, before bedtime, those same modern day heroes sit down with the children they brought into the world and love and talk about the day and what they read that evening. They take time to look at the homework. They take the time to cook a good dinner and eat together at the table while having conversations about the day and growing closer. The best parents that raise the best kids are true modern day heroes and who sings praise to them. Me! I was a teacher for thirty years and in every class I had kids that had parents like that. Those parents were my modern day heroes. Thanks for this poem that gave me a chance to thank those heroes. I'm going to change my plans for the moment because your poem sprouted a new poem in my head. I'll be writing it now.
