The War Inside

The War Inside

A Poem by Gaia Octavia

How to live a life fulfilled
to tear it down and then rebuild
why must it elude me so?
leaving me nowhere to go

Filled with emptiness inside
lessons learned are then applied
and though I should feel some release
these whispered poisons never cease

And though I want the voices out
I'm left with all this gnawing doubt
that anything will truly change
or that my thoughts can rearrange

'till I believe that I am worth
all this effort towards rebirth
and I allow myself success
and bask within my happiness

Gaia, The most never-ending arguments are possibly inside one's own head (Decisions to be made? Why am I thinking of this so much? Who am I anyway?) We often think more harshly of ourselves than others do. Why do we do this to ourselves? It's simply human nature to question one's self.
So well written. The rhyming and timing were right on point. I don't usually quote poems in my reviews but this line really grabbed me by my lapels ("I'm left with all this gnawing doubt.") Gnawing connotes such powerful impact, brilliant wording. I'm saving this piece to my library favorites, so thank you for that. take care...dan

Yes, we are at times our own worst enemies, sabotaging our own happiness.
I think ultimately we have to believe that we deserve to be happy and owe it to ourselves to work towards that. Sounds simplistic but a lot of things do.
I am a fan of the simplistic rhyme scheme and serious subject matter, and you've pulled that off here. I appreciated the contrast here between the childlike rhyming and the skillful use of language, as well.
Bravo.

You are most welcome
I've reread this poem about ten times already and I actually love it. I think it applies to the situations of a lot of people, definitely some of whom I know.
Dealing with depression and trying to get through it by perhaps reinventing yourself -- or rebirth, as you put is so well -- is definitely not an easy thing to do, and addressing it as a war inside is, I feel, very true.
Thank you for this, it's brilliant.
