Chapter One

A Chapter by Griffin

The warm liquid passed through my lips gently. A liar hunh? I cocked
my head staring at the limp body.
I was clutching his wrist where two gashes were bleeding profusely.
You could always tell what kind of person they were based off of the
taste.
I sighed and sat down next to it. "well damn this wasn't worth
anything was it?" I mumbled wiping the edges of my mouth on my sleeve.
I dug through the man's pockets and found a ticket stub to Vauxhall's
Dominatrix Club "kinky" I mumbled and pocketed it. I also found a
silver pocket watch with words 'time is on my side' etched on the back
neatly. "stones fan hunh?" I patted his back as I stared at the watch.
"good man."
I began to go through his jacket when I saw someone stumble down the
alley. "aw f**k" I hurriedly pulled off the guys jacket. "great chat
fella" then ran off hurriedly just in time to hear the intruder yell
"oh god!!"
I made my way up the side of a stairwell and up to the roof of a
building. I walked two buildings over before I sat down and finished
going through his pockets.
I found a wallet and a gold lighter. Inside the wallet was an ID card
that said 'Allan Smith', six dollars, a few credit cards and piece of
paper wadded up.
"alright Mr. Allan smith. Things are getting interesting now." I
mumbled smiling as I flattened the paper out on my knee.
"Allan meet me at the bloodsuckers base at midnight on the 23rd. We'll
talk about the rings then. Love Diamond." I smiled wide.
"oh Diamond. The best liar of them all. Mr. Allan smith, you're lucky I
took care of you first. I'm at least gentle."
I heard some cop cars pass down below.
I put the paper and the lighter in my pocket but left the wallet. I
looked at the jacket. It was a dark green leather jacket that had the
appearance of snake skin. It was too big but I put it on anyway. I
sniffed the collar. "ooo you smell delicious!"
I shimmied down the back of the building and ran off.
-
Mr. Wade Reynolds Private Eye was printed neatly on the door. Riley
Johnson Assistant was underneath it.
I knocked on it hard.
There was the sound of movement. I backed away from the door right as
it was practically swung off its hinges.
"Candy! I swear to go-" he stopped. "oh." he ran his fingers through
his hair and straightened his tie. "sorry." he stepped away from the
door and motioned for me to enter.
He was tall and skinny wearing a button up shirt with the sleeves
rolled up and suspenders connected to a pair of brown pants.
"Riley right?" I said smiling as I looked around the room.
The room was neat but old. There was a mirror on the wall and a couch
in the corner with worn seats. There was a desk in the corner with a
few papers scattered around and an onyx globe. The name Riley Johnson
was written on a desk plack.
He scanned me quickly and nodded. "Is your boss here?" I asked. He
nodded. "yeah. He's in the back" I smiled. "Careful he doesn't like
vamps though"
I looked at him surprised. "What?" he smiled. "You missed a spot" he
stated pointing to the edge of his mouth. I wiped my mouth and
laughed. "aw man haha. Don't tell him alright?" he shrugged. And I
walked past the mirror and over to the door.
I didn't have a reflection but I know what I looked like. I was small
and petite with soft curves. I had shoulder length messy brown hair
and beautiful green eyes. My skin was a light brown. I was wearing
black combat boots and a pair of jean shorts. My shirt was black and
said 'motley crue' in big red letters. I had on Mr. Allan smith's
jacket still and a pair of silver hoop earrings.
I knocked and opened it.
Wade Reynolds was sitting behind his desk staring intently at a piece
of paper. He was slim and had messy black hair and pale blue eyes.
"What do you want candy?" he asked looking at me. He stopped and
scanned me over.
"Oh I'm sorry" he stood up and offered his hand. I took it. He had
warm hands and a good grip. He was wearing black pants and a white
shirt with the tie undone.
He pulled away and motioned toward a seat. I sat down smiling.
"I'm Wade Reynolds" I smiled and sat down. "Who's candy?" I asked. He
shook his head. "Uh no one. A problem really." I laughed. "Understood.
I'm Danny Griffin." "What can I do for you Ms Griffin?"
I smiled. "I want you to find something for me," he leaned back in his
chair. "I'm pretty sure there'll be a person attached to it too" he
raised his eyebrows. "My rings have been stolen" he frowned. "Your
rings? Hmm well no disrespect Ms Griffin but I think maybe you should
file a police report or go to someone else. I don't take cases like
that"
I smiled. "I've heard about you on the streets. You have a talent Mr.
Reynolds." "Heard of me hunh? From whom might I ask?" "Johnny Luca" his
smile fell. "He's sending me vampires now?"
I frowned slightly. "how could you-?" he pointed to the wall behind
me. I turned to see that above the door was a long mirror. I faced him
smiling. "So you really don't like vampires do ya?"
He was smirking. "I'm not fond of them no." "Well I apologize then
but I need your help. My rings are very special" I looked at my hands.
There was a ring on my left ring finger and on my right thumb. They
were simple silver bands with intricate engravings on them. He studied
me quietly. "What kind of rings?"
I smiled and moved my fingers slightly. Wade's hands were suddenly on
the table and he looked completely alarmed. He tried pulling his arms
away but they wouldn't budge. I moved my other hand and he suddenly
was leaning back in his chair. "What was that?" he snapped rubbing
his wrists.
"The person who has the rings has varying levels of control over
whoever they decide. I only have two so I can only control you
physically." "What happens when you have all of them?" he asked now
looking concerned.
"When the person possesses all ten rings they can control everyone they
wish mentally and physically and the person won't know they were
controlled afterwards."
Wade nodded slowly. "I see. So how did you lose the other eight?" he
asked quietly.
I sighed and leaned back in my chair. "ruffies" "excuse me?" "ruffies
um ruffalin? The date rape drug?" "ah ok." "see I was on a date with
Leo Bavardi and-" "Leo? Isn't he part of the Bloodsuckers gang?" I
laughed nervously. "Well yeah actually. But um so we were at
Evangeline's night club. He bought me a glass of AB narcissist and
when I woke up I was in the backroom with two guys playing poker
explaining to me what a s****y job they had. The rings I was
wearing were missing and so was my favorite blue jacket." I stated
pouting. "You were only wearing eight of them?" he asked calmly. "No I
was wearing five of them. He got the other three later." he stared at
me looking puzzled. I sighed and began tugging on my earring. "I went
over to his place later to kick his a*s but he was there with two
other guys who, after a heated discussion on my part, cornered me and
took the three I was wearing." "Why didn't you use them?" he asked.
"cuz I wanted to kick his a*s old school"
Wade sighed. "Well why do you need my help then?" he asked rubbing his
temples. "Sounds like you know who has them. Why don't you hire a thug
and tell him to get Leo?"
I shook my head. "no that won't work. Leo has gone missing along with
my eight rings. I've looked around. I've asked people about him and
the rings but no one's seen him. So this is why I need you. Those
rings in the wrong hands could end extremely bad. I need a professional
to help me find them. Will you help me?"
He sighed. "I can't believe I'm saying this but I'll take the case." I
smiled wide. "Great. I'll pay you up front."
I pulled out a nice bank roll. "$1000"
Wade stared at it almost like he wasn't sure what he was looking at.
"I'm pretty sure this case will threaten your life so I'll even give
you a bonus if you get them for me by the 23rd."
"What happens on the 23rd?" I shrugged. "I honestly don't know yet." he
stared at me. "Don't worry, the money is clean. I didn't steal it." I
laughed.
"What about your jacket?" he asked calmly. I blinked. "What about it?"
"it's obviously a man's jacket and it's too big for you. You didn't
steal that did you?" I smiled. "You're more insightful then I thought"
I stated amused.
I stood up, and he stood with me. He was a foot taller than me being
6'4". "Don't worry I'll help you out when it's needed and in the mean
time I'll do a bit of my own investigating." "I know vamps have their
own laws but I don't want any bodies alright?" I smiled with my
fingers crossed behind my back. "Of course not."
We shook hands again. "Good evening Ms Griffin." he said smiling. I
started for the door. "By the way" my hand was on the door knob. "Call
me Danny" I flashed him a smile and then walked out.
Riley was standing in front of the mirror pretending to be focused on
his hair. I could tell he was watching me though.
"oh Riley" he looked at me." I blew him a kiss. He looked surprised.
"I like your hair that way" I opened the door to leave. "Have a good
night!" I waved with my fingers and shut the door behind me.
-
Wade was staring out the window when Riley walked in.
"so I take it you took the case" he stated sitting down. Wade nodded.
"Yeah but I'm not sure if I should've." he faced Riley rubbing his
temples. "She's got connections with the bloodsuckers." "aw man
really?" he didn't look surprised. "Yeah I knew she was a vamp when
she walked in. She had a bit of her last meal on her face." Wade
nodded. "I was wondering about the jacket." he sighed.
"She's hot though. I mean damn did you see her legs?" Riley laughed at
the face he made.
"She's still a vampire."
"This is true" riley said still smiling.
"also I think she knows more than she's letting on" he explained
everything she had said.
"What happens the 23rd?" Wade sighed. "Damned if I know"
"wait isn't that the day that that freak show comes in? It's called
like cirque du freak or something? Word on the street is those guys
are the real deal."
"Great just what I need. A bunch of freaks coming to town while 8
magic rings are missing" Wade muttered looking back out the window.
Riley was grinning a toothy grin while messing with his tie.
"You alright man?" Wade asked noticing riley's twitching. He glanced
at his calendar.
"yeah I'm fine. Just a bit antsy. You know what tomorrow is." he
laughed but was obviously uncomfortable.
"So you're leaving later then?" Wade asked calmly. He nodded and ran
his fingers through his hair. "Alright then."
"Call me if anything happens." Riley said standing. "You know when
you'll be able to reach me."
Wade nodded. Riley had started walking toward the door. "And Riley?"
he paused in walking. "Yeah?" "Try not to get hurt this time"
Riley was silent for a moment. "Yeah" the door shut behind him.
Wade sighed and leaned back in his chair.
