Paper fish

Paper Fish

Raccoon colored clouds,
darkness gathers.
A tumbling sky,
shoulders splatter.

Street puddles boil and gutters clatter.
Bullfrogs assert:
what does it matter?

Neon light tassels lay lucent streaks
on Manhattan sidewalks
and mirrored streets.

The rain from its cage has been released.
Had thunder been a steak
Could I serve a feast?

But today, I've become a sidewalk fish
whose shoes go squeak and squeal and swish,
near buildings that sit like sunken ships.

So I mop up memories
and swim away
from a chlorinated sidewalk this wet Tuesday.

But I feel, yes, I feel
that come what may,
I'm a paper fish
In this city today.

You really threw up some amazing images with your words here Relic, like a kaleidoscope, ever changing from one scene to the next, flashing images of the insanity that surrounds us but we rarely question. The last line really lingers, leaving me with the thought of wondering if a paper fish would be happier or sadder out of water.
I think I'll need to start calling such days paper fish days, when we see but can't quite believe what we are seeing around us, and the confusion that others see it too, but act like it is normal. Personally, I think we are all paper fish, pretending we are something more important.
Superb piece of writing. Very thought provoking.

Good review, thanks so much. :)
What a charming read. It skips along throwing up some gorgeous little images in a a light rhyme sauce. I like the little fish. It seems a good way to be.

Oh - I like this - a great read down the page and smooth, so smooth. Funny you mention Bullforgs and I mention toads - must be the day for these amphibians.

You paint lovely pictures my fish friend, I do hope you find a drain to take you to a river or sumfin X
