The Promise

The Promise

A Poem by Katliegh Merrier
"

This is a villanelle I wrote, in ode to the love of my life.

"

Seldom does life give this rare chance at joy

That comes from a love, found true in first sight.

Thankfully, I have your sweet hand to praise.

Often it comes early, always a ploy

Although for you, take a chance I might-

Seldom does life give this rare chance at joy.

You were always so gentle and coy

Even in your voice the flaws are so slight

Thankfully, I have your sweet hand to praise.

To others you may have been a mere toy

For me you have helped me through many a plight

Seldom does life give this rare chance at joy.

Although my ramblings may start to annoy

It is your fault; you make my soul bright.

Thankfully, I have your sweet hand to praise.

I promise to always work to employ

And bring your heart to a new height.

Seldom does life give this rare chance at joy

Thankfully I have your sweet hand to praise.

The villanelle is a very specific rhyme scheme, so if you're unfamiliar with this type of poem, keep that in mind.
