What Was He Fighting For?

What Was He Fighting For?

A Poem by Kira
"

An assignment done for the worst AP English Lit & Comp class that I think has ever existed...

"

The maid stands on the battlefield

The flag held in her hands

The troops have come and fought and left

To return home to their land

She looks down at a soldier

Who fell by this banner of war

He lays sprawled upon the ground

What was he fighting for?

Perhaps his king desired power

A conqueror’s war was fought

But now his troops are next to none

With what the enemy’s wrought

Perhaps he was a defender

Protecting his homeland

He’d live on forever in tales

A hero among men

Perhaps his queen had been insulted

And had taken great offense

And sent her troops with sword and shield

All at great expense

Perhaps he was religious

And for his God he died

And now he’s up in heaven

Sitting by his Lord’s side

Or perhaps two princes fell in love

Both with the same maid

And decided the only resolution

Was to battle with their blades

The maid again looks down at him

The prince who led the fight

The one who died beside the flag

In the fading of the light

Her figure is a silhouette

Against the setting sun

On a hilltop on a battlefield

Where she focuses on this one

The maid bends down and presses a kiss

To the prince’s bloody head

For because of her the war began

And because of her he’s dead

An easy read and melodic as it takes the reader to the scene and to the tragedy. Thanks for sharing this cheers

I agree with Michael, a fairytale romance, turned into tragedy. You displayed beauty in tragedy, a proposed story in the structure of a poem, and depth. battling for the one he loved I suppose. Lovely write

Keep writing, always

wow, this is awsome and such a fairytale romance gone the way of fleeting passion, death to the lover's fair, you capture the magic nicely. keep it up

I believe it is in a mans nature that he defend with honor, whether it be his country, God or his love. He will usually battle to the end to prove his chivalry.
You did a wonderful job in describing the battles a man may face, great flow.

What is there to say? mmm... for one, I am super careful about what I say and do, so my response time is often very slow. sorry. next... ah, let's see. trivial matters. I am a hopeless romantic. I l.. more..
