A Poem by Maxwell Ryder
"

Written 14 September 2015

"
I have searched and searched
I have ravaged the Earth
Looking for signs in which to be immersed,
Thinking they'd offered me a rational course;
But all they brought me were curses.

First, one man said, "Read the stars"
Then one said, "Drown your sorrows in bars"
A wise man said, "Shelter the poor and orphaned"
While a wizened old woman
Turned up my palm for a small fortune.

What's the profit of it all
When everywhere's war?
When religious men are caught carousing with w****s?
And very bad men only make more of them?
And the "good men" sit complacent in silence?

I have searched and searched,
And I'm sure to search some more
Until I turn up myself, thinking I'm some prophet or a lord,
But I think the secret's in our children.
