A State of Mind

Another poem for Halloween :)

With a sigh, heavy as rain,

With a glance, you try to explain:

'Deepest, darkest state of mind.

Brooding, roaring raging time.'

That's the excuse of the pretty boy,

Always concerned with playing coy.

'You make me laugh, crack and smile.

Foolish man, listen to these words of mine.

My state of being, twisted far,

Very far indeed, beyond your mortal heart.

I replace your sight with visions false

Only to get myself to a little laugh.

For I will not see smiles like these,

When I know only sorrow and grief.

My scorching touch has no mercy bound

I kill at will, you pesky clown.

My state of mind, a disturbing thing,

Sizzling words are binding my rings.

The nastiest weapon in my arsenal.

Doubtless the best part of this carnival!

Mortal know, no wound or cut they need,

They will hurt through other deeds.

So clown, think you my match?

Game on, I'll take of my hat.

Go on, twist a mother's word around,

make them sound like a hollow crown.

Or drown the man, whose life was found.

Chase the presidency, shout out loud!

Silly clown, look at me.

I will call for blood to have my fill.

I drink the nightmare of every child,

Only to return it in the nick of time.

I know the edge, the rocks, the end.

Deprived of sleep, I push again.

I command the forces of friends and foes.

On Sundays, they are all on their toes.

I would make the tired run,

With hollow promises of his son

I would kill his soul, but leave his breath,

After all, suffer cannot the dead.

You think I'm unfair?

Ha! Really? Then let me declare:

The deepest, darkest state of mind.

Brooding, roaring raging time.

Take your time and you will see,

The darkest state, you have not reached.'
