The Arbiter Of Lilt

The Arbiter Of Lilt

A Poem by Nipplegrinder

The arbiter of lilt
sidled his shadow
upon me yesterday.
Caught me off guard, for certain.
Made me read again Whitman.
Read as well directions.
The arbiter of lilt
Played Air on a G String
by Bach
The arbiter of lilt
bade my watch of raindrops
join each other in stream
down a windshield.
Down streets of hunger, loss, shadows.
Crescendos of indecent voices
Cacophony of lament
The arbiter of lilt
shakes flowers from stars
weaves will where men stand
and welcomes wanton women
shaking in shadows of sorrowful shame

Oh my goodness!! Holy alliteration! Feeding my hunger for literary flair!! Sooo your references to reading Whitman again, and playing Bach and the raindrops... the cacophony. Wow, this is heavenly discord in the finest of harmonies if that makes sense to you! If you appreciate the exquisite beauty of darkness, irony, pain then you know what I mean. I literally wrote something almost identical about raindrops coming down a windshield and then converging into one stream.. just over a month ago after a long road trip to the beach.. I’ll have to give it some polish and editing before I post it up... like nearly everything else I write, it’s not “finished.”

I really can’t begin to describe how well I love this piece except to say it sings to a part of my soul that loves reconnecting with the classics and having the decadence of solitude and quiet to myself to appreciate simple details. Thank you for writing!

There is always darkness and light. Personal perspective determines which one we see more of. It's always important to strive for the light. It creates the shadows within which we find some comfort.

"The arbiter of lilt shakes flowers from the stars," and we blossom in that garden.
