Underground Barbecue

Underground Barbecue

A Poem by Priscilla Edwards
"

Underground Barbecue is about living in a false reality due to mental illness.

"

I lean against a tree with a book in hand

The book isn't bland

It's about a guy who couldn’t understand

why it was a plan to expand the land

The tree is tall and stout

I wonder how it could sprout

Even with the drought

I still have my doubt

The grass beneath me is wet

I shall name her Lucette

Don’t forget the threat of her silhouette

I bet you regret this clarinet duet

But don't be upset

She’s just grass that is wet not a woman named Lucette

So I’ll eat her with a little vinaigrette on top of a baguette

The bright sky is blue

Great day for a barbecue

It's a delight to reunite its much overdue

Hope they bring some honeydew

We can toss the horseshoe

And play some peekaboo

Makin fun of grandma’s hairdo

She might have used glue and a jackscrew

A butterfly flew high in the sky

Nearby my eye, so I said goodbye

I saw a guy, he was a spy

I didn’t ask why cuz he’d deny

He said “hi, why do you cry?”

“My feet touch the ground but i'm in a cloud

But you see this compound isn’t right when said aloud”

The leaves are lifeless and brown

The sight is priceless you won't be letdown

When brown they fall all around a pound on the ground that won't slowdown

Please don’t frown when I tell the story of Jamestown

It’s a timeless story I’ll tell it at sundown

Might be pointless but it’ll help you calm down

The leaves fall all around behind the playground

In the loud renown town contained underground

Belowground is where we reside

I don’t know why it is classified

Tonight I will write underneath the manmade moonlight that I am terrified

Despite the fight, mankind might be crucified

There will be no need to plead for this genocide

Indeed I am afraid they will invade so I prayed but it was occupied

We must unite to ignite the light to override this homicide

absolutely in love with this! the sense in nonsense is wonderful. made me laugh a couple of times but i can feel the sadness and loneliness a false reality results in at the same time. the rhyme scheme makes your poem sing-songy, which sounds very nice, and adds to the "crazy"!
i look forward to read more of your work!
