Heart of the Beat

Heart of the Beat

A Poem by Shannon

There it is -
More than sound,
Beyond feeling -
A joining.

Of humanness
Of earth
Of water
Of sky

Animal skin taut,
Striking tattoo.
Hey-ya.  He-ey.
Hey-ya Hey Ho.

Bound by modern voices,
Bestowing old wisdom,
Mother nature's heart beat.
I sit on the earth, consumed.

i think you have done a pretty good job in "putting" your readers in this pretty spectacular moment ... introspection will often bring one to such a place ...our connectedness sacred and profoundly "silent" .. something you do not know about me is that i have a syndrome that causes riging of the ears and for about the last several years ..at times...i can actually hear my heart beating ..its a thrumming like a generator pulsing ..kind of weird eh!? .. but Mother Nature's is something quite a bit more isn't it ;)) i like the little chant/song in the third verse ... kind of fun .. :)

So many indigenous people are in tune with earth's rhythms, in the way that those who live in concrete jungles are not.

I love to breathe in Nature's cathedral.

Agreed. This is my experience of being invited to feel it.
Beautiful writing.. I wrote one called I am Siksika, I am not but I hope it is true to them.

This one was an outsiders genuine experience. Thank you for the read and review.
There's something very appealing about Indian culture that many of us embrace. I know what you mean about feeling it, too.

"A joining.

Of humanness"

I love that line. I love how you don't just write poetry, but you create it. You do such an amazing job crafting words together to fit just how you want them to. Great poem :)

You are very perceptive. I don't really see myself as a poet at all, but more as an observer, and a .. read more
This reminded me of cultural, traditional music of Native Americans, which is part of what I am. I could really feel the beats flowing in this poem. It matched the sacred rhythms of an old Native American tribe tune, seemingly never ending in its stream throughout the earth. Well done!

Thank you, that was indeed my inspiration. I tend to find powwows so powerful I sit in awe.
Lovely. From "There it is.." to "consumed".. Now I have Enigma's "Return to Innocence" playing in my head

I had a Native American vibe from this...Mother Nature's heart beat.
I loved the line: I sit on the earth, consumed.

I love this poem, especially the repetition in the second paragraph, and the short descriptive 'glimpses' we get (e.g. 'animal skin taut, Striking tattoo".

Thanks for sharing this, it's beautiful.

Thank you for the read and review. Glad you enjoyed it.
There is something near ethereal in your words, something as a Brit i can't or don't fully understand but somehow, feel in the resonance of your words' movement. Beautiful.. start to finish. Will now go and touch the stars.. :)
