Innerworkings

Innerworkings

A Poem by VERONICA

1. Hurt heart winces
locked up princess
rhythm & beat
unlock me

Smile nice & chaste
lips together
but it won't serve
me anymore

Imaginar-
y pretendy
that's how you see
me oh well

This  beast quells spells
flames flicker quicker
staccato building
beat it to a pulp

My sequin dress
tears at the seams
it seems that I
will not be contained

Tamed framed & then
neither can you
that's why you treat
me this way

there is no rationality
when you meet the dragon with the
crystal tiara bubbling new worlds out her cranium
clawing to pieces that which she birthed

Hurt heart winces
ripping to shreds
unlocked

2. I will be discrete
step with light feet
some problems there's
just no solving

caught between
immovables
they're ingenious
in stubbornness

I can't focus on
my novel
my eyes on the verge
of bursting

& you are cold
& they are cruel
it all just feels broken
it all just hurts

& I'm really good
at staying off topic
& I can sit here pretty
with a quivering closed mouth

sad eyes like my
grandma & the rest
of my clan
we never have to talk

about anything other
than the books we
read or what's
visually appealing

but when this s**t's
between you & them
you & yourself
why should I speak?

I never intended
to be a mediator
I just can't stand
the way you sit there

As though you've said
all there is to be said
& there are no wounds
left to tend

You don't know that
my jaw has wound
tighter in the time
that I've known you
