The retaining wall

The retaining wall

A Poem by S. S. Allen

You hesitate as you re-call that moment.
Call me back,
Quickly...you panicked.
Want to be committed
But just a little bit.
Put your hand in the fire
Just enough to feel its warmth,
But not enough to get burn
As soon as it gets hot
Reflex is to pull back.
And all you do is hide;
here behind this retaining wall.

Didn't your mother teach you...
Never to play with fire?
