Broken, Betrayed, and Damned

Broken, Betrayed, and Damned

A Poem by Merle Van Dee

Voices within and without,

Telling me I am living

Like one already dead,

Fruitless days and sleepless nights,

Endeavors lost and devoured

By ghosts from my past

Skeletons in closets

Long closed and forgot.

I walk a path never forged,

No fork in the road,

Nor signs to direct weary feet,

A diverse path,

With barren desserts,

Flowering oasis’s,

And steep mountains.

The light doesn't always reach me,

Fate and Destiny

Long since been betrayed,

A wandering vagabond.

I see the world through troubled eyes.

Question the authority before me.

I guess I am still angry.

Had my blood spilt on friendly lines,

Watched friends spill theirs,

Just to see the color.

Watched the sinless suffer

For the crimes of those in black.

I have pissed on holy graves,

Am in need of closure.

Took the blame for sins I didn’t commit.

Walked towards an early grave.

Watched my name slain for your Good name.

I don’t blame you,

But am bruised from the fall

Just like the rest.

Been punished for your acceptance.

Still on the run,

They don’t know what I have done.

A sudden stop from a long drop

Could patch all this up quick.

Do I want to be remembered like that?

I know the pain that causes.

A burn and a slash,

Heal too fast

I need something much greater.

Or maybe perhaps

Forgiveness

For myself

And those I hate.

Dear Fate,

I deny you,

I will choose my own path

From now on.

Won’t waste anymore blood

On the unfaithful.

I will fight for the unwise

Spill all I have

For the others like me

The broken, betrayed, and damned.
