Illness

Illness

A Poem by Here's What I Say
"

Now gay couples have healing powers?

"

When the doctor handed her to them
Joy overcame them
A new person
Brought to them
Because they loved each other
She was pushed into the world
To two people
Who desperately wanted love
And to love
Why them?

“She’s sick.”

A sick baby was given to them
Neither understood how
They weren’t raised to hate
She scowled
She cried
She burned at their touch
She can’t honor her mother and father
Because the tablet didn’t say “fathers”

“Talk to her,” the doctor said
“Touch her.
“Hold her.
“Kiss her.
“The more you love her
“The sooner her illness will leave.”

She wouldn’t stop crying for a week
She wouldn’t stop scowling for two
It would be longer
Before she could heal
From the enduring burns
Before she was ever born to them

One day
She discovered her illness
The crying started again
The shame only began
She reached up
Groped
Grabbed
Gasped
One burn began to fade away

She still ached
When they touched her
But for a few weeks
They didn’t know if it ached because it burned
Or if she was starving for it

Then one day she reached out for them

Illness then divorce

Then a new step daddy

She had to be cured first
Because Daddy shouldn’t have to juggle
Between love and church.
