Witches and ListsA Chapter by TKBickelDays later, four bodies jammed into a classic Mini Cooper and raced down the twisted English countryside roads. Mick tried to keep his personal protest under wraps about the fiery redhead witch, way to good looking for his comfort, in the driver seat. No-way was he going to sit in the front seat next to her. Witches, hissed in his mind. The further away from them, the happier he was. Mick’s mind drifted to the past of a good friend he lost to a witch. Well, his friend wasn’t dead. The witch took a fancy to his friend. Ok, more than a fancy. She wanted to keep him. The deceiving witch cased a spell, taking the poor fools free will over other women. Now the fool couldn’t stand to be away from his little witch in any given amount of time. Yes his friend was a fool. His fool of a friend was the one that wanted to date the crazy witch in the first place. Look at me now in a confined tight space, inches from a witch. Psychics and witches, what else can I get myself into? Mick knew it was bad juju to entertain such a thought. Murphy’s Law would rear its ugly head and kick him in the butt. Mick’s concentration snapped back to the tit for tat discussion with Samantha crammed next to him. Having her conveniently in the backseat separated his lovesick double trouble dopes. Knowing them all to well, they would have been all over each other. Besides, Sam needed the extra leg room. While traveling to meet up with Kelsey, Sam tried to put up a fighting argument with him that all witches weren’t bad. Sam’s words rang in his head. Witches isn’t the issue, it’s the monogamous relationships you have the problem with. He liked his freedom and it was going to stay that way. Just because Sam truly wants only one particular woman in his life doesn’t mean I want the same thing. No witches! This one kept peeking at him in the rear view mirror, staring at him like he was some kind of rare bug. “Oh come on Sammie, Lara Croft isn’t a real person so you can’t idolize her.” The discussion afoot was on who they idolized in their teen years. “And James Dean was a real person? It was all Mick rolled his eyes. “Well mine did have flesh and blood, not a computer image.” “Let’s pull out the James Dean comparison list. Fast cars-check, like the girls-check, loner-check, big brooder-check…Looks like you’re doing pretty good.” Kelsey held her tongue during the long drive but now she spoke up. “He also died young.” Samantha snapped a harsh response. “That won’t be happening,” and continued on before it fully sunk in with everyone. “Now let’s look at the Lara Croft list. Kick your a*s ability-check, cool weapons-check, travel around the world-I can check that one now.” She fluttered eyelashes at him, “Beautiful-check.” An, “Oh My God,” moaned out of Mick as she continued. “Money, mansion and butler, I’m still working on.” Sam threw his two cents in. “I can tell you one thing Lara didn’t have that was a true shame to miss out on.” She smiled sweetly to him looking back at her. “And what is that baby?” Mick winced at the sound of baby coming from her. Not because of the pet sounding of it but mainly homesick for his Baby. “She didn’t have a great boyfriend.” “No she didn’t. Her lose my gain and a big one at that.” Mick went to distracted the two of them, knowing talk like this was going to traumatize him in the end. “So is that the real reason you wanted those Desert Eagles desperately for your graduation present?” “Can’t deny that.” “You know real girls wanted cars, trip to Can Cun or money. You wanted…guns.” “Hey! You know Dad enjoyed the hell out of giving me my metal peeps.” Mick clenched his teeth. God I’m an idiot! I should have known this would trail to Keith. Conversation shut down with tight tension lingering in the air. The brothers knew it was tough talking about their parents. It had to be massive harder on her. Kelsey was at a lost in what just happened but stayed quiet and continued studying Mick. She found him very intriguing. Samantha couldn’t help the hefty sigh. “Mick it’s ok. I’m adjusting.” He laced his fingers through hers and squeezed as she rested her head on his shoulder. “They are still apart of my life even though their not here…By the way, where are my hatchlings?” “In your Dad’s safe waiting for you mother eagle.” Mick managed to pull a giggle out of her. “When we get back, they’re going to need to spread their wings. You up to target practice with a side bet?” Mick knew that was one bet he was bound to loose. “Sure but I’m not going to wear a dress when I loose.” Samantha broke out with cheerful laughter. Sam didn’t realize he was holding his breath as Samantha and Mick talked. Slowly, he released it and looked at Kelsey that broke her silence quietly to him. “Are they always like that?” A crooked grin popped out. “No, by now they’re usually at each others throats.” Mick barked. “Hey, I heard that.” Samantha joined in. “We heard that. God the way he acts you think we fight all the time. Can you believe that?” Mick rested his head on hers, “Na, Never.” Kelsey had one more question. “Is she talking about guns or birds?” Sam finally had his hearty laugh for the day. * * * * * Hollow’s Eve approached and it was taken very seriously around Samantha shook her head while watching the hustle and bustle of the busy town. If these people just knew there is a real reason to be scared, I bet they won’t like Halloween anymore. Two women pasted by wearing elaborate witches costumes. I wonder if those are real costumes or real witches. Sam, Mick and Kelsey stepped out of the Holiday Inn. Thanks to Kelsey, they snagged the last room in town. Mick did a little side shuffle to avoid the two passing witches. Samantha watched Kelsey put a lid on the laughter that shown brightly in her blue eyes. “Mick, you’re safe. You are in the presents of only one witch…and I don’t bite.” Mick huffed under his breath. “Not worried about the biting.” Kelsey’s polite hospitality disappeared as she grabbed Mick’s arm and spun him around. “Why do you dislike witches so bad? You do not know me to pass judgment on what kind of person I am! If anyone has the right to pass judgment, it’s me to judge you! I’ve seen enough of you to know what kind of person you are.” For a moment, Mick was stunned silent. “You are right. I’m sorry for any disrespect I may have caused. I’ve had a bad experience in the past that I can’t seem to shake.” Warmly she smiled. “Thank you. I would like to hear about your experience.” She hooked her arm into Mick’s and guided him down the sidewalk passed Sam and Samantha. “If someone is abusing the craft, they will need to be brought before the council of their territory. Just like the unnaturals, we hunt and take responsible actions to the ones that take to the dark side of the craft.” “I didn’t know that.” “Well now you do.” Sam and Samantha drifted behind Mick and Kelsey. They watched Mick loosen up and relay his story. She told him in the end he needed to have a heart to heart with his friend. It was wrong to mess with someone’s free will but those spells could not hold long unless it is truly something the spellbound person deeply wants. Sam laced his fingers through Samantha’s. “I can’t believe my eyes. Is our Mick softening for a witch?” She giggled. “It has to be the blue eyes. I know a pair that does amazing things to me.” “Funny, they do nothing for me. I think I’m partial for vivid green.” “You know talk like that will get you everywhere with me.” Sam stopped and pulled her in. She could see the needy hunger in the vivid flare in his own while touching her with his life force. The low rumble of his voice reverberated through her, weakening herself control. “What to you think the public display of affection laws are like here?” Their hearts, tethered to each other, raced ahead. “Do I look like I care?” Sam tried to snuff out the intense and consuming need before it fogged up what was left of his commonsense. “We’re not doing a very good job at controlling this. You slam into me so hard at times, I just drown in a self inflected frenzies.” “I thought I was the only one with that problem.” They felt a tug on their tethered line and a heavy weight of being watched. Reluctantly, they peeled their eyes off each other and looked to an unimpressed, crossed armed, scrunched up face Mick. “Do you two think you could keep your paws off each other and walk down the sidewalk like the civilized people do?” With a frown, Samantha snapped a, “NO,” at him. “To bad we have things to do. Come on.” “Where are we going?” Kelsey piped up. “I need to pick up a few things for tonight and arrange for us to have Curiosity distracted Sam. “Why is “Something there attracts Malmisha. I can easily summon him.” “It sounds like he’s attracted to you instead. How do you talk to him?” “Well, communication with a spirit is difficult. They can project images, feelings and few words at a time. The best way, if possible, is letting a spirit posses you but it’s not a safe practice. You really need to trust a spirit before you give access to your body. Once they enter, the spirit has full control. It can be a real fight to boot them out.” Mick joined in. “Sounds like a voice of experience.” “Damn right. I was young, stupid and wanted to impress M`oria.” Samantha mouthed grandmother to a confused looking Mick as Kelsey continued. “If it wasn’t for her, I don’t think I could have shaken loose one that tricked me into letting it in.” Sam pried for more information. “Do you let Malmisha posses you?” “I would but he refuses to.” “Interesting, why is that?” “Haven’t a clue. He won’t tell me, so we have our slow chats.” Samantha hopped into the chatter. “Who is this other spirit he’s looking for?” “Oh, Orelana, there’s a romance novel in the making. According to him, she is his other half of existences and will not go on without her. They were separated in death and he can’t find her now that he’s in spirit form. He’s looked for her in his homeland and moved to ours in search. If he talks about her to much, he can become madding. Not like he doesn’t have an air of madness anyway. I’m beginning to think Sam could agree. He felt the torture of being away and the bliss being near Samantha. “”That’s an interesting point of view.” Samantha was excited. Homeland can easily be home world, realm-whatever. Finally, she will get some concrete answers. Strangely her thoughts shifted to shopping. “Do you mind if we stop somewhere so I can get a cheesy souvenir? I bought a stein for Mick shook his head in disbelief. “Really, you’re thinking about shopping?” “You betcha, I am a girl if you haven’t noticed yet.” A vision of her in heels and black skirt hit him. Quickly he wiped the image from is mind. Unfortunately I have. Mick wasn’t about to miss this primetime to pick on Sam. Sam caught Mick’s huge grin. Oh man! “Yea-yea-yea I know, if anyone would know it would be me.” Mick managed to get his chuckle in for the day. “Keep the carrots to yourself Thumper.” Kelsey was the one lost in translation. “Carrots? Thumper?” Mick’s chuckle grew into a hearty laugh. © 2012 TKBickelReviews
