In a moment of clarity she

bravely explains her love for him invariably…

My love,

The time has come…

As you might know.

That my mind… has started to go…

Tears…

Her eyes meet his…

You've loved me well over our years together.

We have made it through rough and stormy weather.

This news of dementia I fear might be too much…

To expect you to be faithful and such.

Our vows said through sickness and in health…

But this is to deny yourself…

I see the love in your eyes,

A love that is disguised…

I want you to be free,

to live life without me…

For in my condition…

Sobs…

Of course this is my rendition.

I will forget you.

I will change…

I can't…believe I'm having this exchange.

Wet face…

As much as I fear I'll be alone…

I want you to be happy at home.

Hands grasped…

Leave me, my dear…

Please, Leave me here…

After she speaks, he looks at her tenderly, as his anxieties relax in her humility...

My love,

I could never leave.

I have acted selfishly.

Voice cracking.

I sensed something wasn't right.

And I allowed myself to drift in the night.

After all these years I started to have fears.

I didn't know how...

to switch gears.

We have our routine.

Looking down…hands wringing.

Dementia…I mean…

We don't know what to expect, and I'm not alone yet…

But, I'm afraid that without you I'll…

Regrets.

We just lost touch, and it was getting to be too much.

Why are you so amazing?

Gazing…

Eyes meet.

Filled with defeat.

Tears falling.

You are my moon.

The one I just had to marry,

you made me swoon.

Can I hold you tonight?

Let's reunite.

Allow me to make everything right.

I don't know what is coming,

it's all so mind numbing.

Touching her cheek.

He can see she is weak.

We will take it day by day.

I can say...

I'll never leave you…

 I promise…

I do.

This is one of the most original pieces about dementia that I've read. Many take a similar approach, but yours is fresh & unique, but also very relatable. Good use of non-structured rhyme & playing with similar word sounds. I love the way this has one person speaking for a long time, then the other person speaks -- the two sides go together well (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

A real tear-jerker if ever I read one, so powerful and profound in essence, it brings a tear to even this rough and ready, middle aged man's eyes and trust me, that takes some doing!!

Kudos and bravo !

Congratulations to you both, I think you have complimented each other's style, thinking, and worked so brilliantly together to pen a real gem here! An emotive and somewhat controversial topic for some but you both nailed it so perfectly...True love shall overcome all adversity!!

This poem gave me tears! What emotion and feeling. You each did a stupendous job as always but brought together this very real life tragedy and gave it meaning. Never take a moment for granted, live it and live it well! Cheers to you both!

This was like....WOW!
There is so, so much emotion in this poem and it brings the reader to become emotionally involved too. The words are simple, but yet I found myself myself being wrapped up in such a powerful piece. Its not all that often which something comes along and I take every word in and think to myself - that's touching...very touching. This is beautifully written and it just goes to show what talent you have and ALWAYS had. You have crafted your words in such a way, that a round of applause is due *clap* *clap* *clap*

To sum it up, this is stunningly put together and I am so in awe at what you have achieved. When I first started reading your work, I was impressed. You are now showcasing just how far you have come with your writing. I AM SO PROUD OF YOU.

This work is exceptional.
