I am Nothing

I am Nothing

A Poem by Dewella~Vintella

I am the monster in my dreams,
creeping from night to night.
I am the evil of my own mind,
that I can no longer fight.

I am the emptiness of my heart,
and the constriction in my lungs.
I am the worst of my enemy,
of which I can not outrun.

I am the pathetic voice in my head,
and the deadly,
horrible worthless thoughts I think,
as I lay awake in bed.

I am the shattered pieces of my heart,
and the claws in my soul.
I am the nothingness of my thoughts,
that I never let go.

I don't know how autobiographical this piece is, but there are many powerful images in this, so I'm not exactly sure where to start.

I guess I should begin by telling you I know the feelings you describe here, but I also know that you cannot let that negative image be what defines you.

You are obviously more than just "the nothingness of my thoughts." You are a human being with all the intrinsic value of humanity within you.

The poem I have linked on my profile page, Desiderata, says what I would want you to hear,

"Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself."

"Hi... My name is Freddie N. and I'm a recovering philosopher."
"Hi Freddie"
"I noticed that in the depths of my philosophical addiction, that I did battle with monsters and became one. I found myself staring into the Abyss and it was staring back into me. I took in despair and it wound up owning me. My Sponsor says..."

OK... All humour aside, this is incredibly well crafted. The staggeringly potent imagery and waves of emotional turmoil have left me devastated in a most satisfying way.

While I like the pacing and structure of the entire piece, this one stanza could be the whole poem by itself:
" I am the shattered pieces of my heart,
and the claws in my soul.
I am the nothingness of my thoughts,
that I never let go."

In fact that last line could be redeveloped into an entire piece. What is the nothing? Why do you not let go? What's if feel like to claw into that nothing and never let it go? Does it bleed? Does it have cold or warmth? How is it defined? And what made you dig it out only to hold onto it? So much to be asked in a sentence and so much you can answer and paint a very vivid picture of that moment.

Oh so much more than nothing, can nothing write?
Can nothing feel?
No there is a depth of emotion written in your words and they are NOT nothing
