Everybody has their own valentines

Everybody has their own valentines

A Poem by Zipho_D
"

Is she for me to keep?

"

Everybody has their own valentines

I walk around the streets wondering

I see all these people holding their soulmates

Smiling and laughing with their beloveds

Roses are given out in numbers, more

Gorgeous smiles come about.

I tell myself that the next beautiful

Soul I see is mine to keep. Hours pass by

Not a single being passes. I am trapped in a

Ghost town all of a sudden. Am I worthless?

I ask myself. But as I pick myself up to leave

She approaches from a distance.

A silhouette. A shimmering light coming

Closer and closer. Then the breeze blows

Soft and smooth. Hair curls up and her skin

Glimmering in the sun. This is a beautiful soul

Indeed but is she for me to keep?

Your poem seems to be a victory, in that the narrator gets his girl . . . but to me, this is a poem of sadness. It's sad to me that this narrator feels he is nothing without the girl. It's sad to me that this narrator buys into all the marketing around valentines day . . . looking at everyone as if all have found soulmates (an over-used word with ridiculous expectations built in). This is a very sad way to view one's life, but I spent much of my life feeling this way exactly. I grew up when a woman was nothing without a man. I've always been without a man & only recently have I finally learned to own my independence proudly. I love a poem that says one thing, but provokes many other types of stories and feelings from the reader's own experiences (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

we never know when our soul mate will show up for the dance...
meanwhile we sit and tap our feet to the music of love, and wait.
