when birds die

when birds die

A Poem by alan peter kelly

birds do not complain
when they pass away

they die quietly

and while i know
even birds would prefer

to pass
in the comfort

of company

when they
fall

it's quiet

with no complaint
or pageantry

I love birds. The speak in music and embody the free spirit in flight. I have very little fear of death but a great deal of concern about the condition of humanity. Your poem is wonderful advice.
Your poem itself is quiet, without pageantry. One thing I adore is when the form and subject matter agree with and enhance one another, as they do in this poem.

They sing and fly their lifelong...so good to see a poem that pays them homage! Hope all is well in your world, Alan!

I've seen a baby bird die in such a way, no pomp or circumstance, just a silent opening and closing of the beak, a sudden jerk here and there and then no more, as I stood helplessly at the box with hopeful worms.

This reminds me of David Whyte...noble, sad, quiet, full.

I own a bird, and let me tell you, boy do they complain, haha.

But you are right. This is incredibly unique; I'm glad it crossed my path.
