Oddity Commodity

Oddity Commodity

A Poem by Tate Morgan
"

A man should be judged by his works not his beliefs. Beliefs are intangible and inconsequential to life.

"

self portrait graphite on canvas

For just over two thousand years

we've held to the thoughts of the past

Followed teaching,  and the preaching

that professed faith to all whom asked

Dare we ever question that faith

we find ourselves mired in pain

Be-seeched by those, one might suppose

to be blessed or somehow ordained

Legislating morality

has never worked and never will

you can't force folk, under a yolk

of privileged who sit top a hill

Eating from the tree of knowledge

perhaps we found our sanity

We need be fair, man's self aware

one can't deny humanity

The religious right will survive

behind glass in a museum

An oddity, commodity

for all those who want to see them

Author's Note

Tate Morgan
You know I have given this much thought of late. The recent Supreme court decision on gay rights has split the country asunder. As for me I have a sister who is gay I simply want for her happiness. The government has no business in our bedrooms or our private life. We seek to marry those who bring our lives meaning. Follow your own path. It is not for others to impede the road upon which choose. This is not a question of morality it is a question of rights. By what right does any man have the ability to tell another who to love? love thy brother as thyself.
“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me:
I lift my lamp beside the golden door.”

A man should be judged by his works not his beliefs. Beliefs are intangible and inconsequential to life.

Tate, I have missed you, my friend. It feels like forever since I have read you work -- actually it has been forever, hasn't it!? Sorry!

On to your writing, as always, you never fail to amaze me with the story you tell within your words. You capture the reader and keep the hooked until the last word which then leaves them begging for more. I can relate to this write as many others I am sure.

Truly fab tho, love the wording and the structure! x

' Do unto others as you would have them do unto you .. ' - those words are found in most holy books but sadly, not everyone can read. (Me, being a cynical as i can be. )

Your finely written poem has content worth discussion, whether for or against your opinion because that is what liberty to think and feel is all about - as you well know TAte.

To reason words, to trust one's own mind, to be led by one's own thinking is what matters. Law is meant to create peace, not create puppets from thinkers and set fire to reason. We all have rights, we can all make decisions.. and, God willing, with empathy at all times. ' We need be fair, '

I completely agree...why should the government tell us who to love...I too have a sister who is gay and lives with her girlfriend. I too wish her complete happiness. Well written Tate.

it is really a shame that some people should take it upon themselves to judge others based on the people they love.

Always a joy to hear. From you tip one for me
I completely agree with your thought. No one should and can deny humanity & the paths we choose cannot be decided by any other, or judged by set of rules. Loved "Oddity, commodity" :)

You speak the truth with eloquence my friend, I have never taken to being told what to do by religion, i believe in the messengers that come here Jesus, Buddha, Mohammed, Krishna and there have been many more that have not been turned into a religion, the message these men give is a way to live in peace and love, not judging others nor enslaving them to a belief that has been twisted and distorted by those who seek power and wealth, many a church has done much to help the poor and sick but the masters of religion still it seems to me dictate something their messengers never said, just a look at IS can show us the distortion of the words of the Prophet as the crusades taught the world to kill those not considered Christian, did Christ ordain such murder? of course not, the world is here for us to learn and grow but the masters of religions want us stunted and obedient to their wishes and we don't even know who they are, faceless figures who pull the strings and rake in the cash, thanks Tate for your work, sorry to have hijacked it for my rant, best wishes to you and yours :)

My friend I must acknowledge the superb poem and its theme while stating that I hold a different view to the specific subject for my good reasons............ But do allow me to share one of my earliest writings here.
"Born with our choice we aren't
Die with our will we won't
But live a life on our own
There lies the fault alone"
