Unrequited

Unrequited

A Poem by So Ensnared Truth
"

For her, for always.

"

Unrequited

I believed what you said

Every single word

They echoed mine

It was like we were meant to be or something

Or something

The words you wrote were unlike any I’d ever read

And they were written for me

I shed tears reading them, and still do

Only now my tears are not those of happiness

They sting my eyes

For these bitter, prickly tears burn

They burn but they do not flame

They smoulder

Day after day after day

And I cannot douse the embers

They will smoulder endlessly

Long after I have turned to ashes

I like this extended metaphor, of the tears (and the pain they represent) being a fire that won't even be extinguished by the narrator's death. The final line fits seamlessly and concludes the poem with a nice morbid bow.
