The Campfire

The Campfire

A Poem by k
"

"Some write one memory, others write a dozen."

"
We sit in a circle
and the stars litter the sky above.
The flames warm the cool autumn air.
They glow between us
as we scratch our memories
onto the papers.
Some write one memory,
others write a dozen.

She remembers how the blade
kissed her skin,
red blood welled to the surface
like a smear of lipstick.

He remembers who he was
and how they disapproved.
The mistrust melts away
as he learns the world is friendlier than he thought.

She remembers the ones
who said they loved her,
sharp tongues and sharp pains
notwithstanding.

She remembers when he died
the relief was immense.
Now the relief has passed
and she has to face what's left.

She remembers the five names
that were once black holes.
She hopes to never remember
another name again.

We remember pain.
We remember darkness.
We remember together.
And we write it down.

One by one we toss
our memories into the fire.
A page lands in the embers
and seconds later the heat engulfs it.
A page falls onto a log
and burns like a witch at the pyre.
Another page disintegrates
in the eye of the storm.
The flames lick the pages,
lapping up the discarded memories
until all that's left of the past
is smoke and ash.

This seams to deal with a kind of therapy for adults. I think it's somewhat similar to this site. We each have a story to tell, and some throw in a piece of themselves as though attempting to throw their bad stuff into the light. I've seen it many times.

A great poem. The different memories of different people shown through different stanzas, along with bringing it all together in the end is genius. Great symbolism.

"Until all that's left of the past is smoke and ash", loved this. We shouldn't let our past control our present and deprive us from our futur.
