Miss Howell

Miss Howell, this assignment is ridiculous.  I am fifteen years old, and thrity-five is a long way away.   How you expect me to be able to tell you what I want to do twenty years from now escapes me.  The average college student changes majors seven times.

Do you know how far I've come just to be here?  I've lived in seven different cities in the last five years.  I have had twelve different homes with twelve different "parents" in that time.  I don't even know anyone in this class.  I'm not in sports or drama, and I don't plan to be.  I don't like my classes, not that I've ever been in one long enough to try.

I don't know what you want me to say.   I never think about the next few years because I'm too worried about the next few days.  This assignment is ridiculous, Miss Howell.  I don't know what I want to be.

Let me try this again.

I don't want to be working at a burger joint.

I don't want to be a waiter, either.

I don't want to be pushing pencils in some tiny, white office.

I don't want to be working too hard for nothing.

I don't want to be working too hard for anything.

I don't want to be a judge; it's too much pressure.

I don't want to stand in front of a bunch of gawky teens, either.

I don't want to grow crops, raise animals, or fish all day.

I don't want to run mindlessly around while some fat-cat profits from my work.

I don't want to be the fat-cat that profits from some guy's hard work.

I don't want to be a musician or an actor.

I don't want to cook, clean, or watch kids.

But I guess there is one thing that I do want to be.

I want to be me. Does that work well enough, Miss Howell?
