The Doors

The Doors

A Poem by buterfligirl
"

Maybe the saying "Curiosity killed the cat," isn't too far fetched

"

I was always fascinated with other worlds

They were so different from my world

They were all that I could want

Everything that I could ever need

It was my dream to travel to one

Then as I was exploring one day

Just searching for anything fun

I somehow came upon three doors

Each a different color

They radiated mystery

First I chose the one to the right

A large white door

I pushed it open and to my surprise

Everything as far as I could see was white

Something I've never seen before

Throwing away all caution

I jumped through the door

But when I landed the white cushioned me

I picked some up and threw them into the air

Then watched it slowly fall back down

It was fun like I've never felt before

But that joy didn't last long

I soon realized how cold I was

As the white stuff no longer melted in my hand

So I decided to leave

Next I chose the door in the middle

A smaller reddish-brown door

I pushed it open and to my surprise

Everything was a sandy brown

Something I've never seen before

More cautious, I slowly stepped in

The ground giving away slightly beneath

Bending down, I scooped some into my hand

And let is swiftly rain from my hands

So different from the white stuff

It was so fascinating to watch

But the fun didn't last

For I noticed just how hot I was

I had already sweated through my clothing

So I decided to leave this one too

Last I when to the door in the middle

A leafy green color

I pushed it open and to my surprise

Everything was covered in shades of green

No two colors alike

I curiously stepped inside

The trees stretched high up into the sky

While all kinds of plants littered the ground

Animal noises pieced through the stillness

Crying out to each other

I felt like I could listen all day

But I soon abandoned that thought

For I could feel eyes on me

With more coming by the minute

So I had to leave this one too

I walked back outside the door

And looked back at the three doors

I had tried every one of them

But none of them had been what I was looking for

So I gave up and turned to leave

It was then that I saw something behind

A door covered in heavy vines

I peeled it away to reveal the color beneath

It was all the colors of the rainbow

I felt immediately drawn to it

Unable to help myself

I opened the door and walked into it

Inside was the most beautiful scenery

The sky was a shade of blue I've never seen

The grass was a shade of green gardeners wished for

Then I saw not too far away

There was a feast taking place under some trees

With people laughing and eating

When they saw me

They waved me over to come join them

But as my feet carried me towards them

I started to feel like something was wrong

Something about those people just seemed off

I tried to stop and think for a moment

But my feet refused to listen

As I continued to struggle against an invisible force

The world began to change before my eyes

The colors darkened and the smiles became sinister

What had looked like and elegant feast

Turned into a table littered with bones

Then the people suddenly weren't people

Their nails and teeth lengthened

They stood still as they watched me

Hunger and blood lust shining in their eyes

But still I continued to get closer

Just as I was only a couple feet away

I finally broke the spell

I turned and ran without hesitation

But not far behind me

I felt them give chase

Their claws scrabbled on the ground

Their teeth clacked in anticipation

Saliva dripped from their lips

Bloodcurdling howls ripped through the air

They were gaining on me

Suddenly the noise stopped

I looked behind, but they were gone

I looked forward in hope

But that hope was quickly dashed

The creatures had circled and got in front

The door wasn't too far away now

But the creatures were blocking my way

Several of them jumped towards me

I screamed and fell to the ground

They soared above my head

I tried to get back to my feet

But their claws grabbed on to my foot

Screaming, I kicked at the claws

They released me and I jumped back up

And I soared to the open door

I had long been in love with other worlds

They were so different from my boring life

But now I am satisfied

Just by staying in my own world

Lest those creatures come to take me

I like this a lot. I suggest reading through it slowly though. There are some grammar errors that can be easily fixed if you just slowly read through it as if you're reading it for the first time.

A lovely, thrilling, and even comical tale of how the "grass is always greener on the other side".
