Battle weary

Battle weary

A Poem by Ama May Cooper

Reality chokes me
like a barbed wire collar
carving and shredding my skin
My lungs giving up the fight
I welcome the darkness
I welcome the end
My arms outstretched for some escape
Tired of running
Weary legs collapsing below me
No strength to stop the bullets
Tearing through my empty shell
Numb and distant to the sound of the world
Please let me struggle no more
Put down your guns,
Place your weapons on the floor
Can't you see
Can't you see
You have taken it al from me
This cold barren wasteland of human form
Void of emotion
It all became to much to bear
I fall defeated, not a hope to be found
Let me rot here
Let my sorry state become engulfed in the flames of the forgotten
Just take me away from here
Im done, it's over
The last bullet pierced the unpenetrable armour
And ill embrace the coldness travelling through me
I can fight no more
Oh death you are a long awaited friend
I beg you no more second chances
No more failed attempts
Let these pills silence my thoughts once and for all

This poem expresses deep emotion and stark imagery. Some people go through life battling everything, as if at war with life itself. It's one fierce struggle after another and, even though some battles are won, there is an inexorable descent into failure and death. Unfortunately, a few people seek what they perceive as peace through the oblivion of suicidal death. I don't know if that's what you had in mind, but that was my knee-jerk reaction. While the poem is dark and depressing, it is nonetheless well written.
