TOOTHBRUSHES ARE COOL!

I thought it might be nice to praise a humble tool that's taken for granted.

There does exist a simple tool
that warrants our attention
a humble item unacknowledged -
begging for a mention

It's long and lean and sleek and cool
so very light to handle
I scrub until my toothy-pegs
are glowin’ like a candle

I'll slowly run my tongue along
that smoothness, left to right
and grin and say LOOK AT MY TEETH
for they are pearly white

The toothbrush surely is the bomb
that makes me hum and whistle
manipulating lips and gums
with prickly little bristles

It'll clean that fuzzy scum
from off my swollen tongue
(swollen thus by copious
amounts of wine or rum)

And when I'm done

if I've the time,

well I can scrub the grot
from round my taps, then throw it out
for it ain’t all I got
(I keep another dozen just in case

I'm left without)

they're lined up in the cupboard

ready for my waiting mouth

The humble toothbrush rules
without a doubt, I hope you know
it stands out from all other tools
I use to get the glow

So grasp it very tightly

(no THE BRUSH you silly fool)

and yell this mantra day and nightly:

 

TOOTHBRUSHES ARE COOL!

Author's Note

This was a bit of fun, writing about something so inane. I'd also started off writing this as a free verse with some soft rhyme, which then became a rhymer with bad meter, and now I've tweaked it s'more and I think the meter's right now - maybe!! Thanks for reading :)

I like the fact that weird doesn't translate to something bizarre or unpleasant all the time.....it could be something fun and amusing like this. You have a good style of expressing this!

A bit of fun perhaps, but it just shows how the poetic imagination can take a simple, hardly ever thought about every day object and produce a quite wonderful poem.

Thanks Beccy, I'm glad you enjoyed this. The inspiration for this came from a rather odd show called "Tomfoolery" which was on here in Australia on a Saturday years and years ago. I'd always down the vacuum to watch it lol!
