Benign Love

Benign Love

A Poem by Doug

I keep a cross on the table beside my bed

Hoping that God may come into my room one night

To give me happiness in my life.

When friends cry I find it hard to smile,

For I want to help them when life is vile

Because I know what it’s like to be all alone,

I know what it’s like when no one answers the phone.

I tell them there is always a reason to fight,

Because love can bring happiness to light,

Whether it’s a father or a mother

Or a friend or a significant other,

Love gives meaning.

a prayer almost, one to repeat!

An apt message. I really love the first stanza, because you've used the "I" voice. The image of you keeping a cross beside the bed in hopes of conjouring God is quite breathtaking. You then go on to describe your emotional boundaries, which I also enjoyed...we so want help those we love, especially when we've known the pain ourselves. I liked this one.
