More Important

More Important

A Poem by Erin Lee
"

What it was like living with a man who had bigger concerns than his family.

"

more important than the fire, running daggers through my brain

more important than the night sweats, and the tempered pain

more important than the tears that salt my feather down

is his hiccups, his hungers, his needs

(paychecks come on wednesdays, more important)

i grin, and suck in the sting of this commodity

he's in charge, more important than a healthy she

more important than the days i chase

a heart ground into the floor

is his cravings for a bean burrito, or another w***e

(paychecks come on wednesdays, more important).

Author's Note

Erin Lee
I intentionally chose not to capitolize anything in this poem. (Was trying to make the words seem less important).
