Kitchen Table

Kitchen Table

A Poem by James Paulin

centerpiece of family affairs

round this hub announcements hail

daily gatherings for food and prayers

depository of keys, books and mail

flowers and tablecloth often array

study desk, place for game and toy

marks and nicks dropped items display

birthday cakes bring smiles of joy

spilled milk supposedly not fussed

holidays marked by a festive feast

family business openly discussed

tears and arguments, a few at least

altar of unity, communion to share

project center for homework near due

normally set with dishes and silverware

memories of meals from pizza to stew

square, rectangular, oblong or round

high chair, side chair or head of the table

this significant furnishing is profound

a place to gather, nourish and be stable

Very nice simplicity. I really liked the imagery in this one and the bits of satire. I particularly enjoyed the last stanza and the first stanza. There are a few parts in the other stanzas where the wording is a little awkward causing the flow and rhythm to be slightly put off. But it is a really great poem that captures all the aspects of what a table brings to a home or family.

Lovely. You took an object and gave it such significant meaning. The flow and pace were both perfect. And the message behind it was wonderful.

Great job!
And congrats on winning the contest!

yes this has pace it is the polarization of peace finding place - and the pace of your poem, I liked this. Its meter is perfect. Nicely done. Now I see why you didn't like so much the last line expression of my poem, of course.
