Lions laying with Lambs

Lions laying with Lambs

A Poem by Viviana
"

I don't write much but, I like poetry about the south so I wrote one.

"

Iced tea made summers so hazy

In the land of Milk and honey

Back porch heat makes you so lazy

Pecan pie fills up the baby's tummy

Make sure to Baptize god’s children

We all got bathed in the blood

We all were washed from sin

If Jesus couldn’t do it, Mamma could

Look at the sky, the devil's beating his wife

Peaches and Chocolate watered my mouth

To pry you from sin, you give up your life

No one’s at home Sundays in the south

Who is the next lamb for the slaughter?

Never have you seen a girl so sweet

You betray him, and now no longer god’s daughter

When you give in to beauty and heat

When they speak of the devil, they speak of a ram

And when they speak of god, a lion

But how can a lion lay with a lam

If when they grow old, we stay silent?

Oh, I Know! Mamma can save me from hell!

She loves me more than the stars

But no love for some sweet southern belle

Could save me from sleeping in cars

A day doesn’t go by that I don’t think of my home

One day I’ll get another farmer’s tan in the south

Because if the blue jay wasn’t pushed, it wouldn’t have flown

And I can taste the betrayal in my mouth

There is more to this work than nostalgia. If you read closely you can find a tale of one growing up in a conservative southern religious culture while still being vulnerable to the temptations of youth. I get the impression of one who got in deep trouble and left for good. This is the blue jay who flew, and who now looks back with sadness. Good work.
