Life of a VegetableA Poem by Jonathan BrooksA lonely day in the produce aisleThe beans are getting snappy again, So it’s best to avoid them today. I’d rather roll with the radishes, Because all they do is play. But they can’t crunch like the carrots do, Or the celery for that matter. They just run in the ranch to stay healthy. But I think they could still be fatter. The potato’s eyes keep staring at me. Sometimes I just want to mash him. Where can I go to escape this creep? I should join the squash for a swim. Maybe I’ll meet another lover. Red and juicy’s just my type. I would really like a plump one But the tomatoes seem too ripe. The zucchini’s throwing a fit again. The cucumber made him mad. It’s best not to get in their way today. It looks like they’ve gone bad. I’m feeling a little lonely right now. My friends and family are gone. They were all sold just yesterday To a strange lady and her son.
It’s pretty quiet in this aisle tonight. The mushrooms are feeling mellow. The lettuce is feeling a little sick, He’s starting to look yellow. The crowds are thinning out now. I can tell because I’ve been looking. Even though I’m on sale today, I’m not needed for any cooking. Maybe tomorrow, I’ll get picked. Today’s just not the one. I know I’m just a smelly onion, But I could really use some fun! © 2010 Jonathan Brooks |
