I imagined the curve of the broken egg shells to be the up turned smiles. As if the broken halves were saying, "Here you go. Enjoy."

This makes me think of our chicken coop. I just pulled three out of the nesting box today. I like how you describe them hatching with the line about the broken egg shells instead of explicitly using the word hatched.
