Time Marches On

Time Marches On

A Poem by Davidgeo
"

.

"
it is taking my hair
dulling my passions
culling my arrogance
stealing my jump shot
circumscribing ambitions
subtracting my loved ones
betraying my dreams
vilifying my muses
accumulating accomplishments
leaving me wealthy
with nothing to spend upon
as time marches on and on
day by day month by month
leaving less of whats left of me
year by year
as i slowly disappear
into the abyss of whats past
toward the inevitability of an ending
like nothing ever did happen. . .
i'll still love every f*****g second of it
until that very last f*****g moment of it
when there is nothing left there to be taken
still... i will always be grateful
that there was ever anything at all
to be taken from me to begin with

I love that first line.

“leaving me wealthy
with nothing to spend upon”
I think these lines are super interesting as well.
Most every line packs a punch that could be a thesis statement to an essay about the passing of time. I can literally imagine writing an essay about time “steeling my jump shots”.

I much enjoyed reading it. Don't agree with the end, but hey I'm just religious and we disagree on a bunch of stuff. I think the entire thing's written fantastically anyways and the “still...i will always be grateful” line is pretty impactful. "year by year / as I slowly disappear" may be my favorite lines.

As what is now politely called an "older gentleman," I can identify with this work. The speaker begins by listing physical losses and quickly accelerates into a full fledged existential crisis. He views himself as an island being steadily erased by the sea, and in the end it will be as though he had never been here. Still, at the end he can be grateful for what he has had. Gratitude puts us in the present moment, and that is all any of us have ever really had.

This reads to me like someone who has lost already most of what there was to lose. That doesn't bode well for the times ahead and yet your words say you have loved and will love every second remaining in your life. There is optimism in your words, I liked that.

It’s a strong sentiment and it was spoken well. Likewise to your weekend.
