On Fishing

On Fishing

A Poem by Alexandra Elizabeth
"

There is more to life than fishing, friend

"
I gave up on fishing
no sharks were ever biting
I only ever caught the guppies

So I abandoned fishing
I took my ship to sea
I sailed around the world
and tasted the air
in every corner
of this globe

I made the sea my friend
I let her toss me round
Where e'er her waves may take me

I loved every desert
and stared in awe at every tree
I breathed in every swamp and marsh
and still have more to see
I walked through a hundred worlds
but there are still five hundred more
I dozed in a dozen forests
and sailed to eighty shores

I returned my ship to sea;
having learned a thousand things;
to sail off and learn still more

So many out there with their poles
awaiting mermaids to tug their lines
yet they only catch sea cows

So if you wish to live a fuller life
listen to me now
for there is more to life than fishing, friend

Take your ship to the ocean
and sail around the globe
it is rich and full and waiting for you

heed my advice
because you will find more than fish out there
that I can assure you
Do not waste it all on fishing
for the sake of your frustration
live while you still can
for there is more to life than fishing, friend
of this you can be certain
