I'm Ok

I'm Ok

A Poem by Hannah Monttkomepy
"

This is a poem about something that's been on my mind lately. Just wanted to get it off my chest.

"

Being who I am

In this world today

With all these things

That separate me from my Father

All these things that tempt me

And make me sin

Again and again

It’s hard

It’s hard,

Because I like artists like

Christina Aguilera

And Janet Jackson

And I like reading stories like

Harry Potter and Twilight

It’s hard

Because most of the time

I feel too distant from my Savior, my Lord

And so I think I’m going to Hell

I sometimes think,

That because I’m not always nice

And that I listen to non-Christian music

That God will punish me

When the final judgment day comes

But the truth is

I don’t have to be perfect

In order to be a Christian.

And I don’t have to always be nice,

And do the right thing.

I’m only human

But still I think

All the same thoughts

That I’ll be sentence to Hell

Because I listen to artists

Like Christina and Janet

Because I do struggle with my faith

The truth is

It’s hard

To keep my faith

In this world today

But God’s by my side

So I know I’ll be ok.

First, here's a little bit of my own background. Myself, I was both born and brought up strictly Christian; being baptized as a child; and, also, confirmed in my youth. However, now-a-days, that I'm older; I'm not so strict; I don't tend to go to church like every single Sunday, anymore; but, I do still tend to pray daily at home saying grace before meals whilst having made the sign of the cross/-etc. Also, whenever I can find time, and, do casually pass by a church on the street; I will stop inside to pray for both world peace/and, also, ask for lots of love and happiness in my own life.

I think, that just because you choose to listen to and like all different kinds of music that doesn't make you evil/or, non-Christian. There are many artists out there who have truly GREAT talents that we can all of us very deeply appreciate and admire; without it having to compromise any our own faith/morals/beliefs. I like the rock band, Queen-lead singer, Freddy Mercury/the pianist, Liberache/the dancer, Rudolph Nureyev...these guys were homosexuals...died of AIDS; but, that doesnt make me a homosexual; nor does it stop me from appreciating the sheer quality of their art, neither. I like the Rastafarian singer/song writer Bob Marley...who's religion allows him to smoke weed/pot/ganga; but, that doesn't automatically turn me into a drug taker myself; still I love his music like completely crazy. To me, the life that another artist chooses to live or lead, has got nothing to do with how I choose to go live my own life personally; and, certainly, will never stop me from admiring them; even though both their lifestyle and tastes might be entirely 'different' from mine. So, really and truly, you have absolutely nothing to feel either ashamed or guilty about. In my opinion, you simply have GOOD TASTE! ;-)

I love this piece because you know I think God created us as unique individual. It is hard to fight down temptation and stand for your beliefs. But God sees the heart and the truth and no doubt you love Him very much. Or at least that is my opinion. Excellent piece.

I totally and completely agree! Being a christian girl in today's society is a challenge. But don't you like to accept challenges? Even if you don't, I like to think of being a christain as a triple dog dare that I have to defeat for a reward in the end!

That is a beautiful poem, Hannah! It's true; being a Christian can be such a battle in this world.

Just a technical note; I think that your poem could use a few fresh words here and there. For instance, some of your verbs could be changed/strengthened, and also words like "nice" could be improved. Doing this will give your poem more power and will help it to flow better.
Also, your poem is somewhat lacking in punctuation. Poetry can be punctuated pretty much the same as prose. ;)

Other than those areas, the poem is wonderful. :)
