Twittering of Spring Birds

Twittering of Spring Birds

A Poem by Nancy Lee Shrader

Twittering of Spring Birds

Tweet tweet, twittering

He and she, treetop cooing

Bird love blooms in spring

Seek the perfect nest

To a lovers hideaway

Hear the mating call

Together they build

Twigs and grasses for the nest

Mom and dad bluebird

Nursery in the trees

Speckled blue eggs cradled there

Bird land lullaby

Mamma sits the nest

A treetop incubation

Papa standing guard

Crackling sounds are heard

Now four little mouths to feed

Chirping hunger pains

In grass and twig nest

Hear the twittering nestlings

Begging for dinner

Now the hunt begins

Earth worms cannot hide from mom

Hungry mouths to feed

Crying all the time

Nestlings begging her for food

Eyes and gaping mouths

No time for cooing

Mother busy all the time

Love birds’ time long gone

Papa sounds the call

Alerting his treetop home

Predators are near

Nest is soon too small

Soft fluff becoming feathers

Nestlings growing strong

Mom looks on with pride

Gaping mouths turn into beaks

Little ones are birds

Time to fly away

One by one, babies take flight

Mom, dad, job well done

Prepare winter’s flight

Chirping dreams of summer home

Sings, fly south young bird

Tweet tweet, twittering

Trees are full of new spring love

Life begins again

Wonderfully amazing.

Love it. Takes you from the mating ritual all the way through to birth and emptying the nest. Wonder if birds suffer from the empty nest syndrome? lol

Crying all the time

Nestlings begging her for food

Eyes and gaping mouths------this was my favorite haiku. it is detouching the reality, I love that.
