Keeping Score

Keeping Score

A Poem by Shawn Purcell
"

An exploration of the language and psychology of cheating...

"

“Three times,” she said

But I counted four.

“Three times,” she said,

I guess she counted wrong.

“Look me in the eye,” she said,

“And swear to me that’s all.”

I counted once in spring and summer;

Then twice in the fall.

“I suppose I should go,” she said

But hesitated by the door.

“Three times, Jane,” I said,

“I swear not one more.”

“Say your love for her is dead,

And walk me down the hall.

I’ll let you have me thrice tonight.

Tonight I’ll be your ragdoll.”
