Heart in a Box

I keep my heart in a box
tucked deep away in a chest
cause only there can I save it
Only then can I keep it

Every now and again, I take it out
I risk my heart to someone else
I let my guard down and walls crumble
But then I am reminded why

I keep my heart in a box
Tucked deep away in a chest
Cause only then can I protect it
Only then is it mine

Over time, I have lost pieces of my heart
A friend here, a loved one there
Each have taken what they wanted
And my heart is no longer whole

They left my heart when they left me
So alone with my heart, I stay
With it locked in a box
Tucked deep away in a chest

Only then, can I keep it together
Only then can I have control
I can pretend everything is fine
when my heart is in a box

But hopefully someone will come
Who will treasure my heart
and give me their own
Only then, can I set it free

I keep my heart in a box
tucked away in a chest
hidden from all the world
Until I can finally set it free.

i think most of us put the pieces of our broken heart into a box at one point during our pain to subdue the intensity

this was heart felt - all the same...setting it free the very same heart we try to control..

A Sad poem, sad because it's what we all have shared at one time or another in our lives, a broken heart. Trusted to one we felt truly cared, then betrayal, heartache. It's true we guard our hearts at times, till that one day our true love does come our way, on that day we give our heart away, but recieve one too! That's when we know their love is true. I loved your writing as it was very heartfelt and true. If you haven't I hope love soon finds you!

Your heart is a treasure and I enjoyed the double meaning of keeping it in a chest, your center, your core - the heart that keeps you living, breathing and loving ~ selectively proverbial in loving others - kept tucked in safely to protect the love you treasure until you find a counterpart to share the treasured love.

This is a moving piece of work straight from your heart in the box. You are talking here about past and present experiences which have affected your entire life, so in order to protect your heart from further hurt and pain, you have chosen to wrap it up safely and keep in the box. Wise move. Although you do know it can peek out at any moment in time, when you are not looking :/
