One Eye Open

One Eye Open

A Poem by b.platte

take a look now look again

grab some paper and a pen

take a second to listen

ill say it once so don’t go missin’

they don’t care how you feel

pay no attention to the cards they deal

self preservation is always number one

number 2 is to laugh and always have fun

third is not last but matters the most

they’ll lie and deny ‘til they’re dead and a ghost

jot this down its number four

if you see a fake grin there are always more

fifth is to the remember the good times that you share

because somewhere in the future those smiles are rare

the unlucky number the unfortunate six

keep an eye out for their conniving tricks

seven’s no heaven this ones no lie

they are your best friend until you muster a goodbye

number 8 is great, pray for your fate

because number 9 warns you of the ones that will hate

they’d rather bury you in your grave

than smile and wave

its no fairy tale but it’s the truth that I speak

but wait for the finale and I swear its not bleak

the final number, the last is ten

if you’re wearing a frown this might show you a grin

of all the liars and cheats you’ll  come to find

there are the special few that won’t leave you behind

so sleep with one eye open with those you suspect

and follow these rules so you'll have no regret
