Numbers

Numbers

A Poem by Stephie Benito

They say when you fall in love

That time stops.

So I sat in your car and

Watched the minutes tick by,

Waiting for the numbers on

The dashboard to suddenly stop.

I was so fixed on the hour

That I didn’t notice the way

You fidgeted like there

Was something you were

Itching to say to me.

I suppose I must have looked

A bit foolish, oblivious, even.

Then again, I needed to be sure.

I had to be certain this time.

So when you leaned over

To push the hair away from my face

I forgot to fully embrace

The sensation of your touch.

I can’t say I remember

The way your lips felt on mine that night,

Which is unfortunate

Considering the longing

I’d previously felt for you.

All I can remember are the numbers

Flipping away on your dashboard.
