Marry Me

Marry Me

A Poem by E. A. Lide

There is a house upon a hill

where a willow once stood.

Its walls are painted blue

and made of ageing wood.

Bunnies burrow ’neath the floors

and in the attic Robins roost-

I think that maybe I would like

to live in this house with you.

I know it isn't much, my dear,

but would you wear this ring?

This tiny little gold one

my grandmother gave to me?

And I don't care what else you wear

or if there are tangles in your hair-

I know that I'll be happy

when you smile and say “I do.”

I know that I'll be happy

so long as I'm with you.

I will love you if the moon

rebels against the dawn.

And I will love if the water

vacates waterfalls.

I will love you 'till the clock

that's counting down my minutes stops,

because, darling, you are

everything to me.

And I know I haven't much to give,

but, lovely, let me tell you this:

I'll love you like the earth surrounds the sun.

Like the Romans worshiped gods.

There is a house upon a hill

where a willow once stood.

Its walls are painted blue

and made of ageing wood.

Bunnies burrow ’neath the floors

and in the attic Robins roost,

I know it isn't much my dear,

but if the ring fits, would you dare?

I-

Well, I guess what I'm trying to say is:

I think that maybe I would like

to spend my life with you.

In the end it isn't the proposal that matters, it's whether she accepts or not.
