Chapter 7

Chapter 7

A Chapter by Dr. YumnaKay

After seeing Jane off the airport, Paul slowly walked back towards his car. At the sound of the aircraft punching its way through the air, he turned to watch it disappear into the distance.

Now nearing his car, he opened the door, slipped behind the wheel and put his head dejectedly on the steering wheel.

Flashes of past memories came up his mind.

Four years ago. Jane had come home with tears streaking down her cheeks as she raced towards her room without acknowledging him standing open mouthed and confused.

“Jane, what’s happened?” He’d kept banging the door of her room but she hadn’t answered, crying uncontrollably.

“Tell me! For Christ’s sake, Jane! What the hell has happened?”

His mind had raced towards Julian with whom she had gone out with, that evening.

“Is it that Godawful Julian? Is it?”  She’d sobbed harder at the mention of his name.

“Dad, leave me alone!! Just go away!” She’d screamed at him like a wounded animal and he jumped back in alarm. The harrowing noise was like daggers stabbing at his heart.

He’d stormed towards the phone, furiously dialing the number to Julian’s phone. But the f*****g man hadn’t picked up! He’d always disapproved of that guy. He’d always given him the creeps whatever anyone said, he’d always known his presence was toxic for his daughter.

He now rammed his arm on the wheel as he started the engine. The memory always brought bursts of fury to him.

It had taken Jane a whole 6 months to recover from her break up with Julian. But somehow he hadn’t come up with the courage of asking her what had happened between them. Suffice it to say, that every time he looked at Jane’s lifeless face for the next few weeks he’d wanted to just go and kill Julian brutally and painfully for making his daughter suffer like this.

In those months, she’d stayed holed up in her room rarely ever speaking while he forced her to eat. It would have been easy had her mother been there. A fresh wave of sorrow washed over Paul now, as he remembered his wife who’d died an early death off a heart stroke, leaving him to look after their children, Jane and Keith.

He’d struggled on her behalf to get her a job somewhere, to make her forget every bitter thought. Finally using up some of his contacts, he’d come in touch with a friend who’d told him about a vacancy in a law firm.

He remembered the night when he’d went to her room to tell her about it. She was lying face down on her bed and didn’t even look up at his sitting by her side.

“Jane, I think it’s time you started thinking about your future.” He’d started softly, while stroking her hair.

She’d turned and looked up at him with vacant eyes that looked empty of emotions. He looked with sorrow at the heavy eye bags showing how she hadn’t slept for days.

“Like what?” She’d asked, her voice hollow.

“About your job. You are a fully educated woman now. You don’t need to be like this.” He’d said with a plea in his voice.

“Please Jane, if not for yourself, then for this ol’ man here. You’ve got to. Just push yourself up, baby. It’s not lost yet. You’ve a wonderful life awaiting you..”

She’d agreed in the end, and he’d left the room with some small relief that at the very least she’d considered what he told her.

The next week, she went to give an interview where he’d told her the job vacancy was. And when she’d come back, he was pleased to see her face radiant and glowing. The interview had gone well, and she had high hopes of getting the job.

The next few days, Jane had spent humming when by herself, and when with him, discussing about the job and the owner of the firm who had taken her interview. It seemed to him, that she couldn’t stop talking about him. He even teased her jokingly about him at which she’d laughed and turned away. It had been good to see her in a lighter mood after what it seemed like years.

Paul’s train of thoughts came to a halt as the phone rang in the car. Picking it up from the dashboard in front, he squinted at the screen. Stopping the car at the end of the road, he received the call.

Listening to the other end, he replied, “Yes. She’s on board.”

Aloha, I did read the previous chapter :) This chapter was very good. Reflective; shedding a little light on the Jane and Julian saga. Nice detail throughout as well. Very intriguing close, sparks a lot of questions of who was on the phone to her dad and why?? Could be innocent; a dad keeping an eye on his daughter or something more. Izzy
